not sure if this is a cool new gnome background or my graphics card is glitching out

(probably a glitch but it’s remarkably stable – I tried switching backgrounds and the others are not affected but it returns when I switch back)

ooh, got a different pattern today!

  • A blank GNOME desktop; the background is generally blue with chunks in 3D cube form, but the image is also broken up into lots of smaller tiles that give it a kind of serrated look. However, unlike in the other one there is barely any color distortion, except for a thin band at the very bottom.

the plot thickens

  • overall blueish Gnome desktop background, but with visual artifacts / glitches, such as snippets of websites and blocks of characters appearing seemingly at random

hm, it’s getting more intense now

  • broadly similar pattern as in the last screenshot but there are some more intense colors now (bands of pink, brown, white) and also many more smaller discernible fragments

oh, that was probably triggered by the automatic switch from adwaita-day to adwaita-night! but very curious that some of the artifacts remained stable

yesterday I switched it back because it hadn’t happened again and GUESS WHAT

  • desktop background with tiny blocky patterns in the upper third and larger rectangular structures in the lower two thirds, some variation, but not as visually busy as some other occurrences

this got dark

  • upper third is now all tiny rectangles in complementary colors, overall grayish noise; lower two thirds are mostly black with other rectangular fragments

  • upper third of desktop background is again lighter noise; scattered across the rest are fragments from plenty of recognizable elements, such as: • Twitter profile pictures of many people I follow • my lunch (bowl with broth) • that “pubs may open in April (without alcohol)” headline • my painted nails • the Not Wikilambda logo • the Wikidata logo • a “powered by MediaWiki” badge • the Twitch logo • the Patreon logo • NoScript and other browser-related icons • various favicons • some emoji reactions

  • fully glitched out desktop with no trace of the original background; major contributions are some Truffle javadoc (“…guest language code in a context, the context needs to be first…”), some Java code in a dark terminal, and some Twitter notifications screen

lower right probably has the largest contiguous fragments to date; also, this definitely includes fragments from GNOME Terminal and Telegram, so it’s not just Firefox

I’ll probably stop updating this thread tbh, it’s getting old and I’m getting tired of scrutinizing the screen to make sure I don’t need to redact anything

  • fragmented desktop background again, with pieces of Java code, various Twitter profile pictures, some logos and photos, and other random stuff
